CONCEPT
The goals and targets set forth in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework represent the minimum global effort required to halt and reverse the loss of nature by 2030. Given that the KM-GBF will be primarily implemented at the national level, countries need to ensure that National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) are revised to include the highest level of ambition that allows for national circumstances to protect, conserve, and use biodiversity in a sustainable manner while also ensuring a fair and equitable distribution of its benefits.
This event is organized by the Issue-based Coalition on Climate Change and Resilience of the Regional Collaborative Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The NBSAPs must be comprehensive, context-specific, and adopt a whole-of-society approach. They should integrate key issues to achieve resilience, such as inclusiveness, gender equality, migration, decent jobs promotion, and health. Integrating these elements strengthens resilience by ensuring that biodiversity conservation is linked to the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, supports sustainable economic growth, and promotes public health. This whole-of-society approach is essential to meet the complex challenges of conservation and development. This side event aims to review the experiences and lessons learned in the Latin American and Caribbean region in incorporating these key approaches, which will inform the process of updating the NBSAPs, drawing on the expertise of United Nations agencies involved in the Issue-Based Coalition. The event will also feature insights from Indigenous Peoples and youth networks. Their viewpoints and lessons learned will be crucial for enhancing the strategies and plans. |
The NBSAPs must be comprehensive, context-specific, and adopt a whole-of-society approach. They should integrate key issues to achieve resilience, such as disaster risk reduction (DRR), sustainable and resilient food systems, and the importance of gender mainstreaming. Ensuring that these strategies promote inclusive and sustainable practices and facilitate broad participation and access to information is crucial for building resilience and addressing the complex challenges facing communities. This side event will focus on enhancing National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) by integrating resilience approaches that address the interconnectedness of disaster risk reduction (DRR), food security, and the role of women and Indigenous Peoples. Biodiversity loss amplifies food insecurity and the risk of natural disasters, making it essential to incorporate nature-based solutions (NbS) to support food systems and prevent displacement. Women and indigenous groups, as custodians of traditional knowledge, are at the forefront of biodiversity conservation and resilience efforts. Their viewpoints and lessons learned are crucial for enhancing the NBSAPs. |
