UNimpeded: Strategic investments to reduce the impact of care burden in adolescent girls and young women

On 12 August 2025, the Regional Working Group on Youth of the Regional Collaborative Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Government of Mexico, GirlUp, ANDHES, and ELA, hosted the side event “UNimpeded: Strategic Investments to Reduce the Impact of Care Burden in Adolescent Girls and Young Women”. The event took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City, within the framework of the XVI Regional Conference on Women (RCW).

The session, held in Spanish with interpretation in English, Portuguese, and International Sign Language, provided a space for intergenerational dialogue among adolescent girls, young women, policymakers, and civil society representatives. Discussions centered on the impact of unpaid care work, including child domestic labor, on the lives of girls and young women, and emphasized the need for strategic investments to reduce these burdens.

Participants highlighted promising public policy measures and regional experiences that prioritize care systems with a generational and gender focus, underscoring the importance of involving public and private sectors as well as international cooperation.

Coinciding with International Youth Day, the event celebrated the leadership, experiences, and voices of adolescent girls and young women across Latin America and the Caribbean, reaffirming their role as key agents of change in advancing gender equality and sustainable development in the region.
