Description
The Working Group on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls aims to encourage and provide a coordinated and effective voice from the United Nations to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the Latin America and Caribbean region. This approach aligns with global objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals while considering the region's diversity (e.g., ethnic and sexual diversity).
The following are key objectives and areas of focus of the working group:
-
Coordinate and jointly advocate as the UN system for women's and girls' rights and gender equality with other entities and in global and regional dialogues identified as priorities and of high impact (e.g., Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), Regional Conference of Women for Latin America and the Caribbean)
-
Mainstream the gender perspective in the work carried out by the United Nations system, including:
1) Promote and implement United Nations system accountability mechanisms for gender equality.
2) Integrate gender approaches in the elaboration and evaluation process of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and other agency programming frameworks.
3) Include gender considerations in humanitarian tools and priorities based on specific requests from working group members. -
Identify synergies and opportunities for inter-agency work and joint implementation of programs, initiatives, and activities related to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
-
Promote the generation and/or management of knowledge: exchange of information, experiences, reflections, and best practices on topics related to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the region.
-
Strengthen capacities and foster dialogue with national gender inter-agency groups in Latin America and the Caribbean to share good practices and experiences, identify opportunities and challenges, and the needs of national groups (e.g., training or technical support from the working group).
