El Niño Country Profiles: Supporting Preparedness and Anticipatory Action in Latin America

The Issue-Based Coalition (IBC) on Climate Change and Resilience of the Regional Collaborative Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean is pleased to share a series of El Niño Country Profiles, developed by UNDRR in collaboration with IBC partners.

The profiles cover Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru, selected based on the historical impacts of El Niño over the past four decades. They are designed to support Resident Coordinators, United Nations Country Teams and national counterparts in strengthening preparedness and anticipatory action ahead of El Niño events.

Each profile provides:

  • An overview of the historical impacts of El Niño and the sectors most affected.
  • Links to official national information sources.
  • Practical preparedness and anticipatory actions informed by previous El Niño events.

The profiles highlight the cross-sectoral nature of El Niño and underscore the importance of coordinated action across United Nations entities and national institutions to reduce risk and strengthen resilience. They are intended as practical reference tools to support country-level planning, coordination and risk-informed decision-making.

The profile for El Salvador was prepared by the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office and is included as part of the regional package.
